Invisible Roots, 2022
single channel video, 14:05 min
The performance series with my mother explores the essence of our relationship and attempts to reinterpret it. I feel the possibility of transforming the meaning of the relationship by giving rise to a new kind of interaction and blur the big absence between us. The performances created magical moments where only pure contact and mutual trust existed, making moments feel timeless, as though time and gravity had ceased to exist. I am trying to share these moments through videos and video installations. This series allowed me to discover new meanings in our relationship and explore the relationship between space, time, and the body.
My mother is sensitive to the environment and can be shaken, but she constantly overcomes and adapts to any situation. Our relationship is similar to plants conversing with invisible roots in the soil. Even during long periods of physical absence, we share a different time, communicate through silence, and maintain a close connection.
Invisible Roots (installation second version) at No Nation, 2022
I showed the second version of “Invisible Roots” in this group exhibition through a video installation. Two videos from the “Touching Game” series were projected onto fabrics, while the film “Invisible Roots” was projected on the wall inside the fabrics. Photos were also displayed, creating the illusion of eyes looking at each other, people, or into the void, with a small gap between them.
Through the performance series with my mother, I aimed to share and experimentally demonstrate our presence in a moment where the past and present become one, where time and gravity lose their significance, and only mutual trust, pure contacts, and touch exist. In today’s society, where communication and relationships are crucial, I propose people have power and importance in the human community and encourage them to feel experience similar “timeless” moments that my mother and I shared. It presents communication methods that transcend time and space and offer a reflective approach to surviving in a capitalist society.
